As a final hurrah from AMC, the TJ is the last application to carry this great heart. Many elects to LS or Hemi swap their rigs, and the 392 V-8 JL Wrangler is a manufacturer god-send, but still, the 4.0 remains relevant. For example, a tire size upgrade may require gearing changes in the drivetrain, but the engine will handle it. Today just from use over time, these engines are all around with 200,000 miles on them and still kicking, as 300,000 miles shouldn't be out of the question.įor a lightweight vehicle such as the TJ, the 4.0 is sufficient even with modifications that add weight, which is where the four-cylinder options can be bogged down. This engine can be modified using stroker kits, turbos, and superchargers, to squeeze more power out of it, but for many, it is perfect as-is in stock configuration. ![]() Of the three available engines for the TJ, one can see that the 4.0 liter should be preferred, a mill that was also available for the MJ Comanche and ZJ Grand Cherokee.
